Transforming cynicism to achieve operational excellence

Industry: Electric generation
Company: Electric and gas utility
Business Unit: Three-unit nuclear power station
Executive: Station senior vice president
Team: Senior vice president and site leadership team

Situation

The senior vice president of a three-unit nuclear power station wanted to mobilize the
entire organization to lead the industry in performance. He partnered with Gap International
to enroll his leadership team in transforming employee cynicism about the possibility of
operational excellence and to align leaders around a specific breakthrough goal and a higher
level of performance the next year.
Gap International conducted a series of breakthrough sessions with 1,500 managers and 1,200
first-line supervisors and production employees to elicit their leadership in support of
the business objective.
The mindset of the organization shifted from one of victimization to a can-do outlook characterized
by increased pride in the plants and more open communications across functions and between
employees and management.

Return on Investment

- The length of maintenance outages was reduced by 50 percent, saving $25 million per
outage.
- The industry performance rating increased from the 3rd to the 2nd quartile.
